Today we interviewed Teresa Barbaro a writer of some books for children and teacher at the elementary school of Cornaredo.
We have asked her many questions about reading, below you find one of these.
DO YOU THINK READING IS IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN AND IT CAN HELP THEM GROW UP BETTER, DEVELOPING CERTAIN SKILLS LIKE CREATIVITY, CURIOSITY ...?
"I am convinced that reading is very important for children and that it helps them to grow better than in situations where development takes place in the absence, or with limited experience, of reading.
The skills that are developed by reading are of various kinds. First of all, only by reading improves speed, to be understood as fluency and expressiveness; especially in the years of Primary School it is necessary, for this purpose, to ask the children to read aloud, so that they too can listen and realize how they read.
Furthermore, during reading, children discover new terms by asking the meaning of those they do not know, or by looking for it when they are able to use the dictionary.
Reading fluently and having a wider vocabulary leads to an ever-increasing understanding of what you read and therefore the positive effect is reflected in every school subject and in all the occasions of daily life in which the child can come to to find.
Do not forget that reading forces to respect punctuation and so the child learns to use it even when writing.
These are all steps that do not happen from one day to the next; for this reason, constancy in reading is important.
Other skills that reading can stimulate relate to the imagination and imagination that are poured into creativity when children are challenged with writing.
Again, through reading, it is possible to know more or less distant countries, to get curious and to look for information by stimulating the ability to read up.
Last, not least, is the aspect linked to the emotions of the reader. Reading, he can meet situations that he has already experienced or who is living and draw comparisons with the characters of the book, comparisons that can console, reassure, confirm or remove doubts, even unexpressed, all in a symbolically cathartic situation."
